Déjà vu
So today I caught the middle The Holiday for the first time on HBO as I was preparing for work and… it was eerie how I heard Iris (Kate Winslet) give this short speech:
I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn’t know you had inside you. And it doesn’t matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends… you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell for that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he’ll see the light and show up at your door. And after all that, however long all that may be, you’ll go somewhere new. And you’ll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade.
It was, for a big-shove-in-the-stomach brief moment, a very vivid walk down There and Back Again Lane…
Random thought #258
I realized I have a strange fascination for trains and subway systems. Coming from Manila with its pathetic MRT system, the Shanghai Subway system amazed me. When I was in Hong Kong, its subway system wonderfully confused me and I had fun finding my way around on my own. And now that I am halfway through Murakami’s Norwegian Wood, I can’t wait til I get to Tokyo and ride the train from the Ueno Station to Shinjuko station. Sigh.
Take me to Japan sometime?
Shanghai Summer Rain
It is raining in Shanghai today. Since it has been such a gruelling hot Chinese summer, this is most welcome. It is not a storm, just a soft summer drizzle, which immediately cooled the environment as well as the volcano in me. Watching the soft rain hit the office’s transparent walls was so calming I almost wished there was someone to watch it with. Like sharing an unexpectedly good movie. Unfortunately, it’s just me, my cigarette and the soft rain for now.
How I know your face, the way you shift your eyes
All our friends would say, maybe we should wait, but they can’t see what’s coming
And to this day, when everything breaks, you are the anchor that holds me And that is why we’ll always make it
How I know your face, all the ways you move.
You come in, I can read you – you’re my favourite book
All the things you say, the way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone, to make me come alive
When the days are long, and the thunder with the storm, can always get me crying
You can make my bed, I’ll fall into it, shattered but not lonely
Because I never knew a home, until I found your hands, when I’m weathered
You come to me, you’re my best friend
And that is why we’ll always make it
How I know your face, all the ways you move,
you come in, I can read you – you’re my favourite book
All the things you say, the way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone, to make me come alive
And when we’re making love
I’d give up everything up for your touch
How I know your face, all the ways you move,
you come in, I can read you – you’re my favourite book
All the things you say, the way you shift your eyes
I never knew there was someone, to make me come alive
When you go to work all the day I wait
For you to come home, recount our time, in our little place
