How China has Made Me a Series Junkie
When I was home, I almost never had time for TV. I especially had no time for TV series which would require me to watch religiously every day or every week. I did enjoy Sex and the City, as well as some of the House episodes I was able to catch as my brothers watched them in DVD. Here in China, though (perhaps, due to the lack of better things to do or plain laziness), I have ended up watching a LOT of TV series.
First, it was just more of that irresistible Dr House- Seasons 2-3. Then it was Criminal Minds Seasons 1-2. I have always wanted to know what went inside criminals’ heads- what makes them go off and why. Whether this show was close to the truth about serial killers and their “profiles”, I don’t know. And although it did not make me understand criminals completely, at least I now have a an idea- I think.
Then it was Grey’s Anatomy Seasons 1-3. At first I though, oh, another medical drama just like ER. Great. Not interested. I put it off for the longest time. But then my friend got hooked. And since we live in the same house, I watched it as she watched it. After a couple of episodes, Dr Cristina Yang already grew on me. Then after a few more episodes, I became in love with more and more characters. I loved how this series made me both laugh and cry so hard. And what do you know, I finished Season 3 and was craving for more. I admit I was a bit mad at the writers for going on strike, but I can’t blame them.
So to fill that gaping Grey void in me, I reluctantly tried Lost. It had a good start and then the flashbacks dragged and I got a bit bored. But I was like, when and how the hell are they gonna get rescued? I thought only of two things- either they get rescued or die. And so to find out, I still watched and before I knew it, I finished up to Season 3. By the end of Season 3, I was hooked again and when Season 4 finally came out in DVD- I finished it in 2 days (work was getting in the way of my finishing it in a day). And now, I am very close to going nuts waiting for Season 5.
After Lost, I could not find anything else worth watching. I tried Scrubs- but it didn’t thrill me. Entourage was blah for me as well. Then we bought the not so famous Medium, which surprisingly, I liked. I liked how the main character, Allison Dubois, is happily married to a wonderful man and how they have three cute and charming daughters. Even if it was 75% predictable, it was a nice breather from all the other series I have been watching where marital and family complications were a must.
I think this too much TV is not very good for me. It is not good for the brain and it is definitely not good for the body. Somebody save me.
